Consortium for Networking and Development (COND) Launches Rouldtable Discussions on Transitional Justice with Local CSOs and stakeholders in Bahir Dar

On 09 June 2026, the Consortium for Networking and Development (COND) convened a Roundtable Discussion on Transitional Justice in Bahir Dar, bringing together local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs), Associations of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and other key stakeholders to strengthen understanding and participation in Ethiopia’s Transitional Justice (TJ) process. As one of the largest civil society consortiums in Ethiopia, COND continues to play a proactive role in supporting the implementation of transitional justice through evidence-based engagement and stakeholder collaboration. The discussion was informed by findings from COND’s recent assessment on community knowledge and perceptions of transitional justice in the Amhara Region, which revealed significant gaps in awareness and underscored the need for broader public engagement. The forum served as an important platform for participants to deepen their understanding of Ethiopia’s Transitional Justice Policy, explore international and national experiences, and reflect on the opportunities and challenges of advancing justice, accountability, and reconciliation in conflict-affected communities.

The roundtable featured dynamic and participatory discussions centered on the core pillars of transitional justice, including truth-seeking, criminal accountability, reparations, amnesty and reconciliation, and institutional reforms. During the discussion, participants explored the critical role of civil society organizations in advancing the transitional justice agenda, emphasizing the importance of documenting human rights violations, supporting victims and survivors, promoting community awareness, and advocating for the enactment of legislation necessary to operationalize the transitional justice policy. The discussions were constructive, and action-oriented with representatives from local CSOs expressing strong commitment to support transitional justice within their respective communities.

By the conclusion of the event, participants collectively pledged to expand public awareness and foster inclusive dialogue through meaningful community engagement in the transitional justice process. The successful convening of the roundtable discussion marks an important milestone in strengthening public understanding and community participation in Ethiopia’s Transitional Justice process.
